Solotec Scientific was approached by a well-known Technical Engineering company, based at the world leading Alderley Park Life Science Campus in Cheshire, whose client is a Global Contract Research Organisation (CRO) and Contract Development & Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO) based within the Pharmaceuticals Industry.
The initial request was to create a safe working environment for up to 3 people with balances, and the provision of additional room for the storage of bulk chemicals and Winchester containers. Each of these requirements meant that a large working aperture had to be custom designed for the cabinet.
Due to the detailed specification, rather than creating a cabinet that was in line with one of Solotec’s standard build cabinet models where the air is filtered and re-circulated, this bespoke unit needed to be ducted into the on-site Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system.
This finished design and installation results in a cabinet that meets the customers individual requirements and also captures and removes any contaminants such as dust or fumes at their source, significantly reducing the risk of workers breathing in contaminated air.
The Solotec Solution
The bespoke design required the careful calculation of the volume of extracted air to create a safe working environment. These design elements were successfully completed and approved to provide the ultimate solution in cabinet safety for the client.
Furthermore, as the safety of the clients’ operators is critical, the custom cabinet was also fitted with two ‘600 Series’ HEPA filters at their request, ensuring that there was another source of air filtration in addition to the LEV system. These filters are built to the highest specification using high quality HEPA pleat material, meaning that fitting them to the cabinet has minimal impact on the airflow calculations.
To assist with monitoring of the filter life, two Dwyer Minihelic manometers were also installed which provide a visual representation of the cleanliness of the filters and also indicate when a filter would require changing. This provides an additional layer of safety for the workers using the cabinet.
Lastly, a Dwyer Vaneometer was fitted to offer a visual indication of the airflow through the cabinet. This specific unit is a simple, uncomplicated mechanical device, offering instant acknowledgement that there is sufficient airflow through the cabinet.
Our custom additions to the cabinet demonstrate the ability and expertise of the Solotec team in delivering bespoke cabinets to meet exact client operational requirements and specifications.
This cabinet, once completed, was delivered to site using our dedicated UK road and transportation to ensure the safe delivery of the unit. The unit was also offloaded by trained Waysafe® Engineers.
